Light That Hits the Mark
On the physicists' desk lies a plate smaller than a sheet of paper. Inside it is a crystal that can rotate a light beam like a handheld mirror. But this crystal doesn't move: it changes the beam's direction when sound is passed through it. The sound wave travels through the crystal and slightly compresses it — the beam deflects like a stream of water from a rudder.
