A star wandered too close to a black hole and was torn to pieces. This cosmic meal produced an elusive ghost particle — a neutrino — that traveled billions of years and got snagged in the ice of Antarctica. Now astronomers have found the scene of the crime. Perhaps this is how most of the mysterious high-energy neutrinos are born.
