Ask a frying pan: after cooking, there's always residual heat. Astronomers 'scanned' thousands of galaxies in infrared rays, searching for extraterrestrial intelligence by excess heat. They found that if anyone is turning entire stars into heaters, they're almost invisible. Space is suspiciously cold.
