R. Brent Tully

American astronomer, co-author of the Tully–Fisher relation, one of the most important methods for estimating distances to spiral galaxies and studying their dynamics. His work laid the foundation for the modern understanding of dark matter distribution in the local universe and large-scale structure.

Biography

Richard Brent Tully was born in 1943. He received his PhD from the University of Maryland. Since 1975, he has worked at the University of Hawaii. He is known not only for the relation but also for the catalog of nearby galaxies, and the discovery of the giant structure – the Pisces–Cetus Supercluster. Member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Key discoveries

Tully–Fisher relation (1977) – empirical relationship between the luminosity of a spiral galaxy and the width of its neutral hydrogen emission line (proportional to rotation speed). Allows distance determination to galaxies
serves as a fundamental test of theories of galaxy formation and evolution
sensitive to dark matter content. Discovery of the Pisces–Cetus Supercluster (1987) – one of the largest known structures in the universe
uniting many galaxy clusters
including the Local Supercluster.

💡 Tully and Fisher initially discovered their relation by studying galaxy rotation speeds through radio observations. It became a 'ruler' for astronomers and one of the proofs of dark matter existence.
