Usually hot things cool slower, but the Mpemba effect breaks that rule: sometimes hot water freezes faster. Now physicists have found a way to control this 'anomaly' in the quantum world—by briefly altering the friction inside the system. This will enable more precise control of quantum computers.

🎯 The Mpemba effect, discovered by a schoolboy in the 20th century, was described by Aristotle: in the 4th century BC, he noted that the people of Pontus heated water before freezing to make ice form faster.
