Nickel atoms woven between the layers of a superconductor turn it into a tangled magnetic mess.

By adding nickel between the layers of superconducting niobium diselenide, physicists got magnetic disorder and completely killed superconductivity. The material now behaves like a tangled mess of magnetic arrows frozen into a pattern below 23.5 K. This property control via a "sandwich" technique opens the door to the quantum electronics of the future.
🎯 Pure niobium diselenide is one of the few materials where superconductivity and periodic electron clusters coexist. Adding nickel erases both, creating magnetic disorder with its own memory.
