The effect appears everywhere: in sound — an ambulance siren changes pitch; in light — spectral lines of distant objects shift. This is the basis of Doppler spectroscopy: by measuring the line shift, the radial velocity of a star or exoplanet is calculated. It also works in sonar, medical ultrasound, traffic police radars, and even household motion sensors.
