Metal foil makes deuterium nuclei fuse billions of times more often at low energies — a discovery that flips our understanding of nuclear fusion on its head.

Deuterium nuclei usually repel each other like two magnets. But placed in metal foil, they suddenly start fusing a billion billion times more often than in a vacuum. This discovery may pave the way to controlled fusion in solids.

🎯 The fusion probability in the foil turned out to be a quintillion (10¹⁸) times higher than for the same nuclei in a vacuum. That's roughly like a single grain of sand suddenly becoming the size of Mount Everest.
