The Moon, Charon, and binary asteroids may have formed from many small impacts, not one giant one.

Thousands of asteroid impacts knocked a cloud of debris from Earth, which, like a snowball, assembled into the Moon. The same mechanism explains the birth of Pluto's moon Charon and many binary asteroids.

🎯 The Moon is iron-poor, which long didn't fit the single-impact hypothesis: such a collision would have mixed crust and mantle material, enriching the satellite. The new multi-impact model naturally solves this puzzle.
