Scientists proposed a model where the Moon assembled from debris of Earth's mantle knocked out by numerous asteroids. The debris mixed with dust in a circum-Earth disk and gradually clumped together. This explains why the Moon is iron-poor. The same mechanism works for Charon and binary asteroids.
