British physicist, astronomer, and mathematician. Best known for his work on gravitational instability (Jeans instability), which explains the formation of stars from interstellar clouds. Also, in collaboration with Rayleigh, derived the Rayleigh–Jeans law for thermal radiation.

Biography

Born in Ormskirk, Lancashire. Studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Taught at Cambridge and Princeton, then worked at the Royal Institution. Author of popular books 'The Universe Around Us' and 'The Mysterious Universe'. Awarded the Royal Medal and other distinctions.

Key discoveries

Formulated the criterion of gravitational instability (Jeans instability), determining the minimum mass of a cloud capable of collapsing into a star.
Together with Lord Rayleigh derived the blackbody radiation law for the long-wavelength region (Rayleigh–Jeans law).
Developed the theory of equilibrium figures of rotating fluid bodies in astrophysics.
