A swing for three never stops—someone is always hanging in mid-air. That’s a frustrated magnet too: its atoms dash about, unable to settle down. Physicists built a quantum copy of such a material from glowing atoms and saw what even supercomputers couldn’t calculate: after a snap, the system heats up and reaches equilibrium within picoseconds. Quantum simulators open the door to a world of materials beyond the reach of classical calculations.
