Galaxies resemble giant pancakes, and their shape affects gravity more than previously thought. A new calculation shows that some of the mysterious dark matter may be just an illusion born from oversimplified models. Stars at the edge of the disk feel the pull of the entire 'pancake,' not just the inner mass.
