Scientists have calculated the 'memory' of gravitational waves in an alternative theory of gravity for the first time.

After black holes merge, spacetime forever changes its shape—that's gravitational memory. Calculated for the first time in an alternative theory of gravity, it held a surprise: deviations from Einstein are best seen in memory itself. Future detectors could use this effect to check whether the theory of gravity is 100% correct.

🎯 The signal of gravitational memory is incredibly weak: it deforms space by a billionth of an atom's size. That's why it hasn't been detected yet. But future detectors will be able to catch this ghostly trace.
