At the dawn of the Universe, just 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang, the James Webb Space Telescope found a supermassive black hole shrouded in dense cosmic dust. For the first time at such a distance, scientists measured the amount of dust by the light of oxygen — it dims the black hole's glow, like tinted glass.
