The James Webb Space Telescope has spotted, at a record distance, an active galactic nucleus hidden behind cosmic dust, like behind frosted glass.

At the dawn of the Universe, just 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang, the James Webb Space Telescope found a supermassive black hole shrouded in dense cosmic dust. For the first time at such a distance, scientists measured the amount of dust by the light of oxygen — it dims the black hole's glow, like tinted glass. This is a key to understanding the rapid growth of the first giant holes.

🎯 Galactic dust is made of tiny carbon and silicate particles, like soot or sand, only a thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair.
