A new model shows that gamma-ray emission in the center of the Milky Way could be an echo of a long-ago flare from the supermassive black hole.

A ghost of an ancient flare has been found at the Milky Way's center. Our supermassive black hole 'sneezed' a powerful jet millions of years ago, and the echo of that event still lights up in gamma rays. Now models of the mysterious galactic glow will become more accurate, and the mystery of dark matter — a bit closer to being solved.
