Giant black holes can 'bud,' shedding small fragments of their horizon—like an iceberg losing chunks. Usually, the laws of physics forbid this: after splitting, the total area would be smaller, and entropy cannot decrease. But for rapidly rotating holes, the prohibition weakens. Such fragmentation could have influenced the birth of primordial black holes.
