The James Webb Space Telescope spotted a supermassive black hole ejected from its galaxy's center, carving a glowing trail 200,000 light-years long through the gas.

10 billion light-years away, the James Webb Telescope has detected a runaway black hole: it tears through gas at 954 km/s, like a supersonic jet. The hole was flung from its home galaxy, possibly by a gravitational wave kick. Its 200,000-light-year-long wake glows from the impact. Such finds explain how black holes can journey between galaxies.

🎯 Supermassive black holes weigh as much as millions of Suns, yet a gravitational kick can accelerate them to the speed of an artillery shell. An encounter with such a runaway would spell catastrophe for a planetary system: orbits would shatter, and planets would fly off into the black void.

🎬 Unlike the serene black hole in Interstellar, real-life giants sometimes become cosmic projectiles, launched by a gravitational kick into intergalactic wanderings.
