Supersolid matter—ice that flows without friction—is usually made by tweaking the forces between atoms. But it turns out, just taking liquid helium and a solid wall is enough: waves at the boundary will turn the surface layer into a quantum crystal all on their own.

🎯 The idea of supersolidity is over half a century old, but it wasn’t until 2017 that it was realized by trapping ultracold atoms in a laser cage.
