A tiny diamond dust particle floats in a vacuum and suddenly starts vibrating on its own, like a minuscule bell. Inside it is a defect that, under light and microwaves, turns into a sound amplifier. This 'sound laser' is thousands of times more sensitive than ordinary ones: it can pick up the tremor from a single molecule or a gravitational wave.
