Why does a distant galaxy send X-ray signals in a special rhythm? It turns out a star or black hole dives through a warped gas disk. Each dive is a flare. The flare pattern betrays the central black hole's spin. In a couple of decades, this gravitational 'melody' could be heard by the space detector LISA.
