Light from distant galaxies carries a hidden recipe—a color barcode revealing the elements inside. For decades, astronomers used familiar tricks to decode it, but the James Webb Space Telescope shows these tricks fail for the earliest galaxies.
In three ancient galaxies, researchers found tiny, super-dense gas knots hidden inside vast hydrogen clouds. Like intense spice drops in a stew, these knots make up barely 1% of the gas yet dominate the flavor. They shine so brightly they mask the true mix of oxygen and nitrogen.
Just 1% of the gas in dense clumps can produce over half the light in special “auroral” lines—named for their glow like Earth’s northern lights.
A new computer model, like a chef adjusting the recipe, accounted for these knots and revealed the real ingredients. In one galaxy, they even found a pocket rich in nitrogen, a surprising flavor burst.
Without careful modeling, oxygen and nitrogen estimates could be off by up to 50%—a huge error in our cosmic cookbook.
These findings remind us that deciphering the early universe requires sharper tools.
