When a wave from a cosmic catastrophe hits a neutron star, it doesn't answer right away: first comes a direct hit, then a series of fading echoes, as if the star 'hums' inside for a while. Astrophysicists have learned to separate these messages, so that by reading them like archaeological layers, they can interpret the star's history.
