A laser beam striking a gas gives birth not to a crowd of photons, but to singles—like a waterfall breaking into separate droplets that never fly side by side. This effect, predicted for the first time for high harmonic generation, promises cheap sources of single ultraviolet photons for unbreakable communication and shooting atomic movies.

🎯 Even the most stable laser always emits photons with a slight bunching. True “one-at-a-time” light is born only in this process.
