Scientists discovered that in a new material, magnetic layers are like a stack of pancakes, but with an unexpected twist: flipping a chain of atoms within a layer is much easier than flipping the whole layer.

Magnetic layers in the new material are like a stack of pancakes: in one layer, arrows point one way; in the next, the other. Replacing atoms with dumbbells distorted the lattice and gave controllable order. This points towards programmable magnetic materials.
