Normally, two closely spaced surfaces stick together due to the quantum Casimir effect. But scientists found a way to turn this attraction into repulsion by adding a magnetic fluid—and made a tiny plate levitate in the air without support. Fine-tuning the materials paves the way for microdevices where parts are held by the quantum field.
