All her life, Nereid pretended to be a stranger. She was cataloged as a captive of the Kuiper Belt. But the JWST saw her true face: crystalline ice and rust, impossible for an intruder. Simulations reconstructed the drama: she is the last survivor of the first chorus of moons, crippled by Triton's invasion. Now she dances alone — the sole surviving note of a shattered symphony. And the galaxy may be full of such orphans.

🎯 Discovered in 1949 by Gerard Kuiper, Nereid bears the name of the sea nymphs — daughters of Nereus. The symbolism is perfect: the nymph dances in a gravitational whirlpool, like a mythological creature caught in a vortex.

The formula explains why distant moons like Nereid are doomed to modest sizes even in a rich protosatellite disk: building material becomes catastrophically scarce even at modest distances.
