New research shows that moons of ejected planets can sustain liquid oceans thanks to ongoing gravitational heating.

After a supernova explosion, a planet can fly off into interstellar darkness. But its moons don't abandon it. Moreover, from this gravitational 'workout', they heat up from within, like dough in a baker's hands, and oceans may hide beneath their icy crust. In the future, such a blind world could be the place where we find other life.

🎯 There may be more rogue planets in our Galaxy than stars — so warm moons with oceans in the Universe could be unimaginably numerous, like grains of sand on all the beaches of Earth.
