The James Webb Space Telescope has detected clouds of molten rock for the first time in the atmosphere of a planet heated to stellar temperatures.

On planet WASP-121b, where even mountains evaporate, Webb’s telescope has glimpsed clouds of mineral dust for the first time. Hellish heat turns rock into gas, and gas into a glowing haze. The discovery promises to unravel the mysteries of birth and death of ultra-hot worlds.
