In a crystal of 150 trapped ions, scientists created and observed magnetic vortices — skyrmions. Each ion, like a tiny magnet, took its place in the whirl, and physicists were able to peer into this quantum dance. Such control opens the way to understanding exotic materials and possibly to new types of magnets for electronics.

🎯 The name 'skyrmion' comes from British physicist Tony Skyrme, who proposed these vortices as a model for nuclear forces in the 1960s.
