The James Webb Space Telescope has reliably detected phosphine for the first time in the atmosphere of a cool brown dwarf — and it turned out to be ten times more than predicted.

The brown dwarf Wolf 1130C, a 'failed star,' surprised scientists: its atmosphere contained ten times more phosphine than expected. This gas, familiar from Jupiter, hints at turbulent mixing of layers. Now astronomers can more precisely distinguish planets from failed stars.
