In the atmospheres of brown dwarfs (failed stars) and giant planets, phosphine was expected, but until now it was barely seen. Using the JWST telescope, scientists finally found a lot of phosphine in the dwarf Wolf 1130C: roughly like a spoonful of salt in a swimming pool. This discovery shows that the chemistry there is more complex and more like Jupiter's. Are such surprises hiding in exoplanets too?
Brown dwarfs — 'failed stars' that couldn't ignite their nuclear furnace. More massive than planets but lighter than stars, they resemble giant atmospheric mixers: their interiors are hot, their upper layers relatively cool, and powerful currents shake this mixture.
