Brown dwarfs are objects that sit between planets and stars: they are more massive than planets but not heavy enough to sustain stable fusion in their cores.
A quarter-century ago, Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz discovered the first hot Jupiter, and shattered all the rules of planet formation. A gas giant on a days-long orbit couldn't have formed next to the star: it's far too hot and lacks building material. So, it must have been born far away and then migrated.
Two stars, AF Lep A and ε Indi A, have become the focus of close attention. Using the GHOST spectrograph on the Gemini telescope, astronomers split their light into colors and, from absorption lines, determined how much carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and thirteen other elements are in the stars' atmospheres.
The JWST space telescope aimed its lens at the scorching rocky world 55 Cancri e, and spotted a dense gas envelope. But the cooler TRAPPIST-1 b, which orbits a dim red dwarf, showed no envelope: just bare rock. The picture came out upside down: hot planets hold onto atmospheres, while cooler ones lose them.
