In the race for light around red dwarfs, infrared bacteria pull ahead, leaving oxygenic photosynthesis in the dust.

TRAPPIST-1’s dim red spotlight provides so little visible light that oxygenic photosynthesis barely smolders. But bacteria with infrared vision take over the planet. An oxygen atmosphere may never develop, leaving a world without animals.

🎯 On Earth, purple sulfur bacteria that use infrared light still live in hot springs—perhaps this is what life looked like in ancient oceans before the oxygen revolution.
