Around dim stars like TRAPPIST-1, photosynthesis barely produces oxygen—visible light is scarce. Infrared bacteria, on the other hand, thrive, gobbling up nearly all the available energy. As a result, an oxygen atmosphere may never form, and complex life never arise.
