John Michell

English clergyman and polymath scientist who was the first in history to suggest the existence of 'dark stars' — objects whose gravity is so strong that they do not let light escape. This idea became the forerunner of the black hole concept.

Biography

Born in 1724 in Nottinghamshire, England. Studied at Cambridge University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1748 and then became a clergyman. Was a professor of geology, but worked in a wide range of sciences: astronomy, physics, seismology. In 1783, in a letter to Henry Cavendish, he outlined the idea that light could be trapped by a star's gravity. He designed a torsion balance to measure gravity but did not have time to use it; the instrument was later used by Cavendish to weigh the Earth. He was not widely known during his lifetime.

Key discoveries

💡 Michell was a contemporary of William Herschel, but unlike him, he received almost no recognition. His idea of dark stars was forgotten for a century until it was rediscovered by Laplace. Michell also was the first to suggest that binary stars are physically connected systems, not just a chance alignment in the sky.
