Abstract

The Drake Equation (a thought experiment to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations) is based on values we don’t know: how many planets have life, intelligence, technology. The author examines how familiar scientific biases have narrowed the search for biosignatures and technosignatures. But if we look through the lens of Indigenous science, the picture shifts dramatically. Just as Western astronomy long dismissed oral calendars, we may be overlooking other forms of life simply because of our way of thinking.

The Drake Equation is an attempt to guess the number of intelligent civilizations in our Galaxy. It’s like counting finished cakes in an unknown bakery: you know the ovens (stars), the baking sheets (planets), and the baking time. But were eggs added to the batter?
