Two quantum experiments — modified Bell tests — have been proposed that can reveal contextual hidden variables underlying quantum mechanics. The experimental design is inspired by hydrodynamic pilot-wave systems, which demonstrate a classical analog of contextuality and reproduce a wide range of quantum effects. It is shown that contextual theories can be consistent with 'ordinary physics' if quantum mechanics and general relativity can be unified. Such models bypass Bell's theorem, remaining local and not requiring 'conspiracy' between parts of the system. The importance of exploratory experiments for the foundations of quantum physics is emphasized.
In the quantum world, particles do not have precise properties until they are measured. The official model refuses to explain what lies behind this uncertainty. But the idea that invisible 'pilots' control particles has been around since the 1920s. For a long time, it was thought that such hidden causes would require instantaneous communication at a distance — this was forbidden by Bell's theorem. However, new work points to a loophole: if the pilots change their behavior depending on how they are measured, the ban is lifted.
The discovery came from an unexpected area: silicone oil droplets on a vibrating water surface. Bouncing, each droplet creates waves, and these waves, as if alive, guide it along. The droplet becomes a pilot that shapes the wave and glides on it. Such a classical system replicates quantum tricks — for example, passes through two slits at once, even though the droplet itself always remains a single entity. Scientists propose conducting experiments with real particles (photons, electrons) to capture a similar context-dependence. If confirmed, the quantum world and gravity will finally unite without mysticism, and the search for hidden springs of reality will shift from philosophy to an engineering task.
