Abstract

The low number of impact craters on Titan points to a relatively young surface. Previously, the age was estimated at 200–1000 million years using scaling laws for water and sand, which fail to account for the actual surface composition — water ice and methane clathrates. In this study, numerical simulations of impacts by bodies of various sizes into an icy target with a methane clathrate cover layer 0–15 km thick were performed. From the results, new scaling laws were derived, using which the crater retention age on Titan was determined to be 300–340 million years (assuming heliocentric impactors and the presence of clathrates on the surface). This estimate indicates active endogenic and/or exogenic processes that recently refreshed the moon's relief.

Titan, discovered by Christiaan Huygens in 1655, resembles a canvas that is constantly being repainted. Impacts from cosmic dust and asteroids leave crater marks on it. But an invisible artist—the moon's own forces—time and again covers everything with a fresh layer, erasing old strokes. Previously, the surface age was estimated by counting craters, but they didn't account for the fact that Titan's crust is not just rock, but a mixture of water ice and methane clathrate, rich in carbon. Scientists modeled impacts on such a "layered cake" and found: craters disappear in only 300–340 million years. For comparison, it's as if all traces of dinosaurs were erased on Earth. The rejuvenation comes from hydrocarbon rains and icy volcanoes. Surprisingly, at –180 °C, ordinary ice flows like resin, filling craters and making the surface smooth, like a fresh coat of paint.
