Christiaan Huygens

Dutch mathematician, physicist and astronomer, one of the founders of theoretical mechanics and optics. He created the wave theory of light and explained double refraction. He invented the pendulum clock and constructed an improved telescope, with which he discovered Saturn's rings and its moon Titan. He contributed to probability theory and mathematical physics.

Biography

Born in The Hague. He studied at Leiden University and Breda University. He worked at the Paris Academy of Sciences, where he enjoyed the patronage of Louis XIV. He returned to Holland at the end of his life. He maintained extensive correspondence with contemporaries, including Newton and Leibniz.
