Leonhard Euler

Leonard Euler made fundamental contributions to mathematics and physics. His formula e^(ix) = cos x + i sin x, linking trigonometric functions with the exponential function, became a cornerstone of complex analysis. It allowed the unification of approaches to solving differential equations, describing wave processes and electrical circuits. Euler also developed the foundations of the calculus of variations, laid the foundations of graph theory (the Königsberg bridge problem) and introduced many modern mathematical notations.

Biography

Studied at the University of Basel under Johann Bernoulli. Worked at the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1727–1741 and from 1766) and the Berlin Academy (1741–1766). Collaborated with Christian Goldbach and other scientists. Was an honorary member of many academies, including the Royal Society of London. Awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus and a prize of the Paris Academy of Sciences.

Key discoveries

💡 Euler continued to work actively even after total loss of vision, dictating to assistants more than 400 articles and books, which constitutes almost half of his scientific legacy.
