A Quantum Compass in the Jungle
A spring scale in a geologist's backpack responds sensitively to every mountain and valley beneath their feet. But springs get tired, and their readings drift — the instrument needs frequent recalibration against a reference. An atomic gravimeter measures gravity flawlessly, but it's the size of a refrigerator and doesn't like being jostled.

How to Hear Ultra-Low Frequencies Without an Antenna
Radio waves that oscillate less than once per second pass through the earth and water with almost no loss. Such signals are used to communicate with submarines and to search for minerals. But a conventional antenna for them would need to be hundreds of meters long, and its sensitivity leaves much to be desired.
