Abstract

In the galaxy GSN 069, known for its repeating X-ray flares (QPEs), scientists investigated its core's past. By measuring light polarization (the orientation of light waves) with the VLT telescope, they found that polarization increases from the center outward—a sign that the core has 'switched off,' and we are seeing a reflected echo of its former activity. The polarization direction aligns with elongated gas clouds, reminiscent of a trail from a lighthouse beam that once illuminated the surroundings. This suggests that in the past, the galaxy was an active galactic nucleus (AGN) with a dusty ring-like structure, rather than just a site of frequent stellar disruptions.
