A new model shows that the tiny density of dark energy naturally arises from the geometry of extra dimensions, like a crisp waffle baked between hot plates of fluxes.
Abstract

A simplified model of the cosmological constant from string theory predicts that vacuum energy levels are arranged like thin waffles, not spheres. Analysis of over half a billion possible Calabi-Yau geometries shows: in 99.95% of cases, the spacing between levels is 10^{-120} Planck units or less — exactly what's needed to explain dark energy. Quantum transitions between states always occur in huge leaps. Interestingly, the age of the Universe imposes a constraint on the shape of these spaces, and all known variants satisfy it.

The mystery of dark energy is a chasm. Quantum field theory predicts a density 10¹²⁰ times larger than observed. In the string landscape, this abyss takes shape — myriads of vacua with different energies, and we are nestled in one of them. Imagine: as in a hot waffle iron, splashes of batter spread and freeze into the thinnest plates, preserving only a ghost of the searing heat, so the Universe freezes in a cell of almost zero energy amidst a fiery storm of quantum fluctuations.

Picture a hyperplane slicing through a sphere of admissible fluxes: the cross-section yields a disk, thin as a mica flake. This is the very 'waffle' — the locus of points where vacuum energy is nearly zero. Its thickness is set by the energy step, and its area by the number of such vacua. Delving into the Schöller–Schachner database — half a billion variations of Hodge numbers describing twisted extra dimensions — scientists found that in 99.95% of geometries, the step is a microscopic 10⁻¹²⁰, as if nature is playing dice with a predetermined outcome. Fine-tuning becomes a statistical inevitability.

The number of vacua in some geometries reaches 10²⁷²⁰⁰⁰. This is not just a lot — if every atom in the observable universe (~10⁸⁰) itself contained an entire universe, and so on ten times over, we'd still not come close. It makes a googolplex a puny speck.

But the landscape is not static. Bubbles of true vacuum nucleate in the false one, and the decay dynamics resemble not a smooth stroll along a brook, but mad leaps across canyons. It turned out that in all regimes, the minimal action corresponds not to small wiggles of the fluxes, but to giant jumps — all the way to the edge of the tadpole sphere. This overturns our understanding of the cosmological measure: the probability of finding a universe with such properties is dictated not by neighboring energy values, but by the readiness of space for radical restructuring.

Transitions between vacua are not a cautious stepping on stones across a stream, but a hooligan leap across a gorge. Giant jumps dominate.

The link between microscopic geometry and the fate of the cosmos is woven into an elegant topological inequality \(\frac{24 J}{e \pi \chi} > 1\). For the entire Schöller–Schachner database, it holds, ensuring that our Big Bang and subsequent expansion are not a fleeting ripple, but a sturdy weave into the fabric of reality. This builds bridges between inflationary cosmology and fundamental physics, hinting that the Standard Model is but a chip off the surface in the vast ocean of vacua. The future promises inclusion of moduli, realistic potentials, and numerical simulation of landscape dynamics — perhaps with the help of machine learning. Giant leaps may become the key to predicting the distribution of dark energy and finally explaining the acceleration discovered by Adam Riess and supporting the multiverse idea championed by Alan Guth and Leonard Susskind.

🎯 The number of studied Hodge number sets (532,600,483) is comparable to the population of Earth — as if every living person represents their own version of twisted dimensions.
