William Herschel

German-British astronomer and composer, discoverer of the planet Uranus, as well as infrared radiation. He conducted a systematic survey of the sky, compiled catalogs of thousands of nebulae and star clusters. He built the largest reflecting telescopes of his time, which advanced the study of the structure of the Milky Way.

Biography

Born in Hanover. He moved to England, first working as a musician (organist, conductor). He became interested in astronomy, grinding mirrors for telescopes himself, and became the King's Astronomer. His sister Caroline Herschel was a faithful assistant and herself became a renowned astronomer.

Key discoveries

💡 Herschel was a composer and wrote 24 symphonies, and built his first telescope from scrap materials, including a manure fork as a holder.
