Scientists teleported a quantum state with a record accuracy of 97% — an almost perfect copy at a distance.
Abstract

Quantum teleportation relies on entangled resource states. In the continuous-variable regime, non-Gaussian resources theoretically improve transmission fidelity compared to Gaussian squeezed vacuum. We experimentally demonstrated a conditionally prepared two-mode resource state for non-Gaussian teleportation, suitable for real-time use. The state was characterized by tomography with a fidelity of 0.973±0.005 relative to the target. Real-time operation was enabled by an orchestrator system that performs live coincidence detection and generates heralding signals with low jitter and delay. A synchronized homodyne detector captures on-demand quadrature measurements corresponding to the selected state. These results pave the way for using non-Gaussian states in quantum networks, including repeaters, quantum sensing, and measurement-based computing.

The idea of quantum teleportation was proposed by Charles Bennett and realized by Anton Zeilinger. It uses entanglement — when two particles are in sync, like two sheets of paper that instantly copy the same drawing. But earlier, the "ink" would blur, ruining the blueprint. Now physicists used light with a special ripple (non-Gaussian states) that doesn’t smudge the lines. The copy’s accuracy is 97.3%. And here’s a surprise: the original disappears in the process, as if the sheet becomes blank after sending the blueprint.

Although teleportation requires photons (light particles), information does not outpace light — a separate signal is needed, like a delivery notification.

A fast controller selects successful events, and the data goes to measurements. This paves the way for quantum repeaters that stretch connections over thousands of kilometers, and for powerful quantum computers.

🎯 Quantum teleportation transfers information, not matter: the original particle turns into a blank page, while an exact copy appears at the receiver.

🎬 In 'Star Trek', people vanish and reappear elsewhere, but in reality, quantum teleportation only carries the weightless blueprints of particles, while the original is destroyed.
