Neural network precisely measures microparticles in chromium alloys — the key to durable solar concentrators.

📄 Showing the "Simple" version — "Popular" is not ready yet. Add it to favorites to help prioritize it.

Engineers create an alloy for solar concentrators by adding hard particles — like raisins in dough, to help it hold its shape under extreme heat. Too big a raisin and the material cracks. Previously, scientists manually counted these particles on microscope images.

A simple method — only noticing bright pixels — would get confused by any interference, like searching for raisins on a colorful tablecloth. DT-SegNet is smarter: one part (YOLOv5) instantly outlines all candidates, the second (SegFormer) — like a meticulous baker — traces each one down to the finest detail, delivering accuracy on par with spectroscopy. This suppresses entropy (disorder) in the data, making results reliable. Even carbon impostors, masquerading as raisins, don't pass inspection.

The network flawlessly ignores carbon carbides — as if it knows they don't belong in this dough.

Trials proved: DT-SegNet outperforms all analogs. Thousands of micrographs are analyzed in minutes, and new super-strong alloys are one step closer.

Chromium not only makes alloys heat-resistant but also gives rubies and emeralds their deep color.

Iron Man's suit from the movies withstands extreme temperatures; modern neural networks, analyzing microstructures of alloys, are step by step bringing such materials closer to reality.
