Quantum Squeezing of Molecules Improves Sensor Accuracy Threefold
Any measuring device is spoiled by quantum noise — the chaotic jitters of elementary particles. To tame it, physicists used a trick on calcium fluoride molecules, much like squeezing a balloon: press in one spot, and it bulges in another.
Invisible barrier tames molecules
Molecules in an ultracold gas are like tiny magnets: they attract when far apart, but when they get close they can stick together for good. Such sticking destroys the gas: particles drop out of the game, and you never reach the quantum regime where all of them behave as one.
