Émile Clapeyron was a French physicist and engineer, one of the founders of thermodynamics. He was the first to formulate the ideal gas equation of state in the form PV = nRT, combining the laws of Boyle-Mariotte, Charles, and Gay-Lussac. In addition, he derived the Clapeyron equation for phase transitions, which was later generalized by Clausius, and helped disseminate Carnot's ideas about heat engines.

Biography

Graduated from the École Polytechnique in Paris, then the École des Mines. Worked in Russia (1820–1830), teaching at the St. Petersburg Institute of Railway Engineers; participated in the design of bridges and tunnels. Returning to France, he worked on steam engines and thermodynamics. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1848).

Clapeyron equation for phase transitions: relates the change in pressure and temperature at phase equilibrium, which formed the basis for the Clausius-Clapeyron equation.

💡 Clapeyron's fate was tragic: his wife died young, and he raised four daughters alone, continuing scientific work with almost no recognition during his lifetime.
