Using a public wide-field camera on the Subaru Telescope, astronomers and volunteers captured the Arid meteor shower for the first time, as predicted for 2021. The meteor count jumped sixfold (~9 sigma) compared to neighboring days, with many faint and slow meteors, though some bright ones with trains were also seen. Modeling points to dust ejected by comet 15P/Finlay during a powerful outburst in 2014 at about 67 m/s, which matches the observations. This success shows how simple tools can catch rare celestial events.
